Moving Towards Sustainability
In KIAN, continuous improvement is one of our values and we are always looking forward and aiming to do better than before. As part of our step towards achieving sustainability, we are now using sustainable FSC certified timber to manufacture all of our popular KIAN timber chairs from our Vietnam Stock-Keeping Hub.
In addition to that, using FSC certified timber also moves us closer towards our ambition of fulfilling the Sustainable Development Goals which have been established by the United Nations (UN).
Read on below to discover what exactly FSC and the Sustainable Development Goals are.
What is FSC?
The Forest Stewardship Council, or FSC for short, is a global, not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the promotion of environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial, and economically viable management of the world’s forests.
Environmentally appropriate forest management ensures that the production of timber, non-timber products and ecosystem services maintains the forest’s biodiversity, productivity, and ecological processes.
Socially beneficial forest management helps both local people and society at large to enjoy long term benefits and also provides strong incentives to local people to sustain the forest resources.
Economically viable forest management means that forest operations are structured and managed to be sufficiently profitable, without being at the expense of the forest resource, the ecosystem, or affected communities.
Sustainable Development Goals
The Sustainable Development Goals are the blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. They address the global challenges we face, including those related to poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace and justice. There are 17 Goals in total, and they are all interconnected.
In particular, when we use FSC certified timber to manufacture our KIAN products, we are striving to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 12. Goal 12, Responsible Consumption and Production, is about promoting resource and energy efficiency, sustainable infrastructure, and providing access to basic services, green and decent jobs and a better quality of life for all.
